6 2'%
H
Y
METHOD 3550
SONICATION EXTRACTION
1.0 SCOPE AND APPLICATION
i.l Method 3550 is a procedure for extracting non-volatile and semi-
volatile organic compounds from solids such as :oils, sludges,
and wastes. The sonication process ensures in:iinate contact of
the sample matrix with the extraction solvent.
1.2 The method is divided into two sections, based on the expected
concentration of organics in the iamplo, The low concentration
method (ind:,iidual organic components of <20 , g/kg) uses
larger sample size and a more rigorous extraction procedure
(lower concentrations are more difficult to extract) . The high
concentration method (individual organic components of ^.20
mg/kg) is muc« simpler and therefore faster.
1.3 It is highly recommended that the extracts be cleaned up prior
to analyt.is. See Cleanup, Section 4.2.2 of Chapter Four, for
applicable methods.
2.0 SUMMARY OF METHOD
2.1 Low concentration method: A 30-g sample is mixed with an' vdrous
sodium sulfate -o form a free-flowing puwder. This is solvent
extracted three times using sonication. The extract is
separated from the sample by vacuum filtration or
centrifugation. The extract is ready for cleanup and/or
analysis following concentration.
2.2 Hi_E± concentration method: a 2-g sample is mixed with anhydrous
sodium sulfate to form a free-fluwing powder. This is solvent
extracted once using sonication. A portion of the extract is
removed for cleanup and/or analysis.
' 3.0 INTERFERENCES
3.1 Refer to Method 3500.
4.0 APPARATUS AND MATERIALS
4.1 Apparatus for rindina: If the sample will not pass through a
1-mm standard sieve o:: cannot be extruded through a 1-mm
opening, it should be processed into a homogeneous sample that
meets these requirem,:nts. Fisher mortar Model 155 Grinder,
Fisher Scientific Co. , Catalogue Number 8-323, or an equivalent
brand and model, is recommended for sample processing, This
grinder should handle most solid samples, except gummy, fibrous,
or oily materials
