Health and Safety Plan
455 E lith St
Tracy,California
3. 1.2 3 Organochlorine Pesticides
Similar to metals impacts, the inhalation risk associated with OCPs can be minimized with
proper dust control. Drilling and soil sampling activities are unlikely to generate significant dust.
3.2 Environmental Hazards
The Tracy Area has a climate characterized by mild to warmer temperatures. Hydration and
shade will be important in higher temperatures, as will rests during working times. However, all
field personnel should be prepared for a change in weather conditions.
3.2.1 Heat Stress
Heat stress is caused by a number of interacting factors, including environmental conditions,
clothing, workload, etc., as well as the physical and conditioning characteristics of the individual.
All employees must be informed of the importance of adequate rest, acclimation, and proper
diet in the prevention of heat stress disorders.
Heat stress monitoring and work rest cycle implementation must commence when the ambient
temperatures exceed 80°F.The Site Safety and Health Officer(SSHO), project manager, and/or
task manager should monitor the anticipated high temperatures prior to the start of work, as
well and monitor real-time temperatures during the work day using a reputable website (i.e.
http://www.weather.gov/) or onsite weather station.
The following control measures can be used to help control heat stress:
• Site workers will be encouraged to drink plenty of water and electrolyte replacement
fluids throughout the day. Potable water must be provided at the jobsite in sufficient
quantities (at least one quart per employee per hour for the entire shift).
• Onsite drinking water will be kept cool (below the ambient temperature, but not so
cool that it causes discomfort).
• A work regimen that will provide adequate rest periods for cooling down will be
established, and based on the work activities, level of PPE, and anticipated daily
temperatures.
• All personnel will be advised of the dangers and symptoms of heat stroke, heat
exhaustion,and heat cramps.
• Cooling devices (i.e. cooling vests)should be used when personnel must wear
impermeable clothing in conditions of extreme heat(>95°F).
• Employees should be instructed to monitor themselves and co-workers for signs of
heat stress and to take additional breaks as necessary. If an employee is working alone
in hot weather, the project manager/task manager should schedule regular check-ins
with the employee.
Terraphase Engineering Inc. Appendices
