PUBLIC 1qEALTH SERVICES
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DIVISION V
Ernest M. Fujimoto, M. Eleventh Street
Tracy, CA 95376
San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD) has
reviewed the"Closure Summary Report-May 1997"prepared by Advanced GeoEnvironmental,
Inc. for the above referenced site.
For the first time since September 1994 the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well
MW1 was not diluted prior to analysis. Groundwater level has risen two feet since September
1994. Levels of total petroleum hydrocarbons(TRH) have risen and Benzene levels have
decreased. MTBE was detected in the groundwater sample collected from monitoring well MW2
which is located down gradient of the new underground tank system.
The existence of MTBE at this site must be further investigated and additional evidence to show
that the level of groundwater contamination is decreasing is necessary. The chromatograms from
past groundwater sample analysis should be reviewed for indications of MTBE so that if MTBE is
confirmed in the groundwater, its source(old tank system or new tank system) is in the process of
being determined. Groundwater samples should be collected from the monitoring wells and
analyzed using EPA method 8020A(or8021 B)to detect BTEX,TPH-gasoline and MTBE.
Samples positive for MTBE should be verified using EPA method 8240B (or 8260A). The
groundwater samples should also be analyzed for TPH-diesel.
After the results of the above work are known, the determination as to whether further action is
required or an addendum to the closure report should be submitted will be made. The closure
report dated May 1997 did not contain mass balance calculations for the amount of contamination
removed and the amount of contamination that remains. These mass balance calculations must
be included in the final closure report.
If you have any questions contact me at(209)468-3449.
Donna Henan, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division
Margaret Lagorio, Supervising REHS
Site Mitigation Unit
c: Advanced GeoEnvironmental
CVRWQCB - Beth Thayer
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
