1
QUARTERLY REPORT
Stewart' s Beacon
' 515 West lith Street
Tracy, California
1. 0 INTRODUCTION
' In accordance with a request from the former property owner, Mr.
William Stewart, Geological Audit Services, Inc. (GeoAudit) has
I prepared this report of site assessment activities performed at 515
West 11th Street in Tracy, California (the site) during the third
quarter of 1993 . During this quarter, 700 cubic yards of
contaminated soil were excavated from a former underground storage
tank area, and _th groundwater monitoring welly were installed
and sa r pled. ` Vizo
2 . 0 BACKGROUND
2 . 1 Site Location
The site is located in a relatively flat business/residential area
of Tracy, California (Figure 1) . The site was formerly a Beacon
gasoline station. Presently it is vacant, but plans are underway to
construct a new gasoline service station in the future.
2 .2 Tank Removal
It is our understanding that three underground storage tanks
(UST ' s) were removed from the site in 1988. Hydrocarbon
contamination was detected in the soil and groundwater samples
collected following the tank removal, indicating that an
unauthorized release of hydrocarbons had occurred. The soil was
allowed to aerate for more than a year, and the tank cavity
remained open. Assessment of the extent of contamination was
subsequently ordered by the San Joaquin County PHS/EHD.
2 . 3 Soil and Groundwater Assessment
Three groundwater monitoring wells were installed by Geological
Technics of Modesto, California in June 1988 (Figure 2) . Soil and
groundwater samples were collected at that time and, and laboratory
analyses revealed that soil and groundwater to the north of the
tank cavity were contaminated with gasoline compounds. Geological
Technics recommended further assessment of the lateral extent of
groundwater contamination, but it appears that no additional
investigations were performed until early 1990.
1
