Each gasoline LIST and the waste oil
LIST had two samples taken from the soil below each end of the UST at approximately 10
feet below grade surface ( bgs). Groundwater entered the excavations and a grab water
sample was taken from the gasoline pit. No groundwater sample was collected from the
waste oil excavation.
Elevated levels of petroleum were detected in all soil samples and the one groundwater grab
sample. The vertical extent of the petroleum impact to the soil in the pits has yet to be
determined.
PHS-EHD is now requiring the responsible parry for this site to delineate the vertical extent
of the petroleum impact to the soil and the source of the contamination that continues to
impact the groundwater around MW-3 and MW-9. The most recent investigation on April
25, 2000 revealed that the soil in the area of the former UST pits is still discolored and has
petroleum odor from depths just above and into the saturated zone.
PHS-EHD has requested that EPA Method 8010/601 be utilized on soil and groundwater
samples collected during the last phase and future phases of investigation. The LUFT
Manual and the Tri-Regional Board Staff Recommendations discuss analysis for chlorinated
solvents when investigating waste oil contamination.
Although EPA Method 8010 for the soil samples at the waste oil UST removal indicated that
no constituents were detected, groundwater in the excavation was not sampled and analyzed.
Because of the chemical nature of the solvents (DNAPL),further testing is required.
PIS-EHD has directed this site to include EPA Method 8010/601 analysis for some of the
soil and all groundwater samples collected most recently and in the future. P1S-EHD will
evaluate the findings of the continuing subsurface investigations and determine if EPA
Method 8010 /601 is to be continued.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
