Ms Margaret Lagono
• Groundwater Sampling
An experienced Ground Zero technician purged and sampled the site wells on September 6, 2002
The wells were purged of at least five well casing volumes of water using a centrifugal pump
prior to sampling The field technician measured the physical parameters of temperature, pH,
and electrical conductivity during the purging process Purged groundwater was contained in
appropriately labeled DOT-approved 55-gallon drums The drums are currently being stored
onsite pending disposal After groundwater parameters had stabilized and water levels had
recovered to at least 80% of pre-purged levels, groundwater samples were collected using
dedicated, disposable bailers and transferred into appropriate containers The samples were then
placed into an ice-chest refrigerated to approximately 4°C and transported to Argon Laboratories
(ELAP #2359) under chain of custody protocol Field notes and purge logs are included in
Attachment A
Groundwater Analytical Results
Argon Laboratories analyzed all groundwater samples for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and
xylenes (BTEX) using EPA method 8020, and for total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline
(TPHg) using EPA method 8015M Irl h d 1 r'm`+ 4414A 4'nA lz0. Oar 1'L
Well MW1 contained TPHg, benzene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes at 620 parts per billion (ppb),
2 8 ppb, 16 ppb, and 14 ppb, respectively No toluene was detected in well MWI No TPHg or
BTEX constituents were detected in well MW2 Well MW3 contained TPHg, benzene, and
toluene 98 ppb, 0 5 ppb, and 0 8 ppb, respectively No ethylbenzene or xylenes were detected in
well MW3 Groundwater analytical results are summarized in Table 2 Laboratory reports are
included in Attachment B
SUNMARY
• Groundwater elevations beneath the site fell an average of 0 78 feet between June 11, 2002
and September 6, 2002 Groundwater beneath the site flows toward the north at a relatively
mild gradient
• Only well MW 1 (2 8 ppb) had concentrations of benzene above the Maximum Contaminant
Level (MCL) of 1 0 ppb Toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes in all site wells were below
both the primary and secondary MCLs for those chemicals in all site wells No gasoline or
BTEX constituents were detected in well MW2
The next quarterly groundwater monitoring and sampling event at the site is scheduled for
December 2002 Ground Zero will notify EHD at lease 48 hours prior to conducting any
fieldwork
G IData\GROUNDZE\Souza\Reporlsl3QMR_2002 doc
