(Horizon) has prepared this letter
discussing the selection of soil samples for laboratory analysis at the above-regorenced site.
The purpose of this letter is to clarify the selection of soil and groundwater samples for
laboratory analysis based upon previous soil and groundwater data collected at the site, and
previously approved tasks as presented in Horizon's Work Plan for Additional Suh ydaf cc
lnyesrixalion(Horizon, January 27, 1998)and Addendum lu Work Plan (Horizon, February 10,
1998)for the site.
The purpose of the scope of work is to further delineate gasoline-impacted soil and
groundwater around the former underground storage tanks (USTs) and former dispenser areas
laterally and vertically as requested in the San Juaquin County Public Health Services,
Environmental Health Division (SJCPIiS-L-HD) letter of September 2, 1997. An addendum to
the Work Plan was required by the SJCPHS-FIID in a letter dated February 6, 1998 that
commented on Horizon's Work Plan and required additional work and laboratory analyses.
the ultimate goal of the proposed work is to satisfy conditions to proceed with Site Closure
approval from the SJCPHS-EIID.
On February 19, 1998, a Horizon geologist observed the drilling; of nine GeoProbc° soil
borings(GPI through GP9)as proposed in the Work Plain, its well as one additional GeoProbe°u
soil boring (GP 10)that was requested by the SJCPHS-EHD inspectors at the site. On February
19, field screening of the soil samples collected in the field indicated detectable organic vapors
in soil samples collected from boreholes GP4 (at .5 feet and 10 feet), GP5 (at 5 feet and 10
feet),GP6 (at 5 feet and 10 feet),and GP7(at 5 feet and 10 feet).
On February 20,the soil samples that had been collected during drilling were transported to the
analytical laboratory. Soil samples were selected for analysis from the 5-foot depths for
lateral definition because of field screening with the OVM which suggested hydrocarbon-
5011 Golden Foothill Parkway.Suite 7 •EI Dorado Hills.CA 95762.(916)939-91717).
