..........
- f
GETTLER-RYAN INC.
Standard Operating Procedure -
Quarterly Groundwater Sampling
Prior to sampling, the depth to groundwater is measured in each well with an MMC flexi-dip interface
probe to the nearest ±0.01 foot and recorded in the field notes. Each well is also inspected for the
presence or absence of free-phase hydrocarbons is also determined using interface probe and if present,
the thickness is recorded in the field notes. Floating product observations are visually confirmed using
a clear acrylic bailer.
After water levels are collected, each well is purged a minimum of three well casing volumes of water
using pre-cleaned pumps (stack, suction, Grundfos) or polyvinyl chloride bailers. Temperature, pH, and
electrical conductivity are measured during purging and recorded in the field notes. Purging continues
until these parameters stabilize or the well dewaters.
Each groundwater sample is collected using a new disposable bailer. The groundwater sample is
transferred from the bailer into laboratory-supplied containers appropriate for the requested analyses.
Pre-preserved containers, supplied by analytical laboratory, are used when required by the analytical
procedure. Duplicate groundwater samples are collected for the laboratory to use in maintaining quality
- assurance/quality control standards. The sample containers are labeled to include job number, sample
identification, collection date and time, analyses, preservative (if any), and the sample collector's initials.
The groundwater samples are the placed in a cooler and maintained at 4 °C for transport to the
laboratory. A laboratory-supplied trip blank accompanies each sampling set.
Once collected, all samples are maintained under chain-of-custody until delivery:to the laboratory. The
chain-of-custody includes the job number, type of preservation, if any, analyses requested, sample
identification, date and time collected, and the sample collector's name. The chain-of-custody is signed
and dated (including time of transfer) by each person who receives or surrenders the samples, beginning
with the field personnel and ending with the laboratory personnel.
Purge and decontamination water generated during sampling activities is placed properly labelled drums
and stored at the site pending disposal.
SOP.QRS/Rev 7196
