i
Ff fry.
GEOSTRATEGIES
FIELD METHODS AND PROCEDURES
Collection of Soil Samples
Prior to collection of soil samples, approximately three to six inches of soil are removed
with a shovel to expose a fresh soil surface. The soil sample is collected with a hand-driven
soil sampling device fitted with a two-inch-diameter, clean brass or stainless steel liner.
The soil sampler is driven into the soil until the liner is filled. The sampler is then
retracted, the liner removed. The liner is then covered on both ends with teflon sheeting
or aluminum foil, capped, labeled, and place in a cooler with blue ice for preservation. A
chain-of-custody form is initiated in the field and accompanies the soil samples to the
analytical laboratory.
A-1
