f
z
1 Project No: 310-01.01
March 20, 1990
$ _ Page 2
REX-OVAL OI' EXISTING TRANSMISSION FLUID TANK
The 5,000-gallon transmission fluid tank was partially _
buried and was underlain by a concrete slab at
approximately six feet below the ground surface. The tank
{ was excavated and soils were removed to the depth of the
F concrete slab underlying the tank; the concrete slab was
not removed. The tank was removed from the site and
disposed of an scrap metal by Rodger Thomas Transport of
' Loomis, California. Piping from the transmission fluid
tank to the loading platform was not removed when the tank
s was excavated.
f M
i
The number, location and depth of the soil samples
collected, complies with the guidelines established in the
x '%r,gional board Staff Recommendations for Initial
{ Evaluation and Investigation of Underground Tanks,
t :;une 2 1988". Two samples were collected by California
Water Labs from beneath the tank; one at each end of the
' tank at an elevation approximately two feet below the
tank. To obtain samples two additional feet of soil was
excavated at each end of the concrete slab underlying the
j ! tank. The two samples, T-lE and T-1W, were collected at a
depth of `pprcximately eight feet below the ground
surface. One sampl , SP-1, was also collected from the
spoils stockpile. The spoils stockpile was left on-site
and covered with plastic.
The .soil samples were analyzed by California Water Labs for i
parameters specified within the• "Regional Board Staff
Recommendations for initial Evaluation and Investigation of
Underground Tanks, June 2, 1988". Analyses included
volatile organic compounds according to EPA Method 6020 and
high boiling hydrocarbons diesel #2, kerosene :,nd motor oil
accerdina to EPA Method 3550. These laboratory methods are 9
described on the enclosed certified analytical report. ,
FINDINGS
Mr. Mike Linzy of Bassett Construction examined the
i transmission fluid tank upon removal. The tank did not
have any holes and appeared to be intact.
1 Analytical results show that: sample T-1W did not contain
any of the chemical constituents for which the soil was
s tested. Sample T-1E contained no benzene, toluene,
kerosene or motor oil; it did contain 4.9 parts per million
(ppm) ethyl benzene, 12 ppm xylenes and 17 ppm diesel 2. .
. Sample SP-1 contained no benzene, kerosene or motor oil,
but did contain 0.15 ppm toluene, 0.76 ppm ethyl benzene.
s 1.7 ppin xylerses and 34 ppm diescl k2. A summary of all
analytical results is presented in Table 1. i
.f
i
