December 1, 1994
Page 3
depths explored(Attachment A). Groundwater was encountered in the test pits at
depths ranging from 9 to 10 feet bgs.
Soil Analytical Results
Selected soil samples collected during the field investigation were submitted to a State-
certified analytical laboratory and analyzed for TOG, TPH-g, TPH-d, and BTEX
compounds(Table 1). Selected soil analytical data(TPH-g, TPH-d, and TOG) collected
from all on-site soil borings, well borings and test pits are shown on Figure 3.
Hydrocarbon concentrations in soils collected from the test pits ranged from none
detected to 890 parts per million(ppm)TOG; none detected to 1,000 ppm TPH-g; and
none detected to 690 ppm TPH-d. Benzene was not detected in any of the soil samples.
Maximum hydrocarbon concentrations occurred at a depth of approximately 8 feet.
Selected soil samples were analyzed for lead using the extraction method of the soluble
threshold limit concentration. Analytical results indicate that the soil samples contained
concentrations of lead between 0.20 to 0.26 ppm.
Groundwater Analytical Results
Groundwater samples were collected from 4 test pits during the field investigation. The
test pits were not purged prior to sampling, and the samples were collected from just
below the capillary fringe.. The samples were submitted to a State-certified analytical
laboratory, and analyzed for TPH-g and BTEX compounds. TPH-g concentrations in
groundwater ranged from none detected to 7,400 parts per billion. Benzene was not
detected in any of the groundwater samples. Maximum TPH-g concentrations occurred
in Test Pit TP-2.
CONCLUSIONS AND SCHEDULE
The results of the investigation indicate that hydrocarbon-impacted soils are confined to
the western portion of the site in the vicinity of the former aboveground tanks, truck
loading racks, and loaders. When the biological assessment and pilot landfarming
experiments are completed,Unocal will select the most appropriate remediation
technology. A brief work plan presenting the site remedial strategy and an imple-
mentation schedule will be submitted to the STCHSD by December 31, 1994.
3100011BIREPORT
