Alpine Rd., Lodi, CA
Original report dated July 13, 2009
Ms. Stonum:
To address the requirements of the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department, we
have prepared an addendum to the Nitrate Loading Study we completed for Stonum Vineyards
in 2009. We understand that you plan to construct a new catering kitchen for the tasting room;
the kitchen will be used only for wine club events. The aim of this addendum is to incorporate
the new use numbers into the nitrate loading calculation.
We have also updated the value for the deep percolation of rain to be consistent with current
data. At your request, we have altered the number of bedrooms listed for the existing
residence; you indicated that only two bedrooms are present, rather than the three listed in the
original report.
To assist the reader in following the calculation, we will present a new Nitrate Loading
Calculation in its entirety. Changes from the original report are indicated in bold italics.
NITRATE LOADING CALCULATION AND DISCUSSION
Because of concerns of nitrate leaching into ground water from septic systems, a nitrate loading
analysis was required by the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department for
approval of the proposed development. The study estimates the potential concentration of
percolating effluent produced by the proposed project over the long term. Where percolating
effluent leaches into the ground, ground water quality may be impacted to some degree should
the effluent reach ground water.
The method utilized for the nitrate loading analysis is based on a simple and convenient mass
balance formula, discussed in a published article by Hantzsche and Finnemore (1992).
Environmental •.
