The denitrification capacity of the soil is predominately dependant upon the abundance of an
organic carbon substrate (which is comparatively high), high soil moisture content leading to an
anaerobic environment, and a high soil pH of 7.8. Saturated soil conditions will develop near the
soil/effluent interface. There should be sufficient organic carbon substrate from the wastewater
and an alkaline soil pH may further promote denitrification. The following Table illustrates the
soil analytical test results. Additionally, as will be discussed in Section II.C.1., groundwater l
samples were also taken from the backhoe test pit, with the results listed underneath the Soil
Nitrogen Content. As expected, the nitrate concentration in the groundwater under the high
nitrate-nitrogen soil is significantly higher than the groundwater nitrate concentration under the
soil with a much lower nitrate-nitrogen concentration.
TABLE 2
'RO
€6 sOI al ,F'ILE C RACTERISTICS AND
x 9 a8uc R#€a s - S4 3=i€ z<€£ "»-., __ i4
ANALYTICAITESTESUL' ' aOR`NITRAT"E"NITROGN"3
PARCEhI, SOIL DESCRIPT'IOiT SANT),€SLLTAiD CLAY; SOILNITROGN'CONTETT .
3€ ,'qs € ' €a¢elI GRO IDVVAT R
6, I'EI,2CENTGESa ,: ;: E
€sae SIs.. :f" 1€ E .
a6 •„%a'7i
LO.G r I I(N 1V I'w<R T CONTENT
e.
$ €a<#r 9 a° ..mLa .: "3°a ¢r -(:•.0 .'' 1 g, 5•
C4•eFF
Parcel 2: Sandy Loam 55%,30%, 15% 38 ppm NO3-N
Sample No._
38 IN.Depth (165 ppm NO,)
Future L.F.
Parcet2: Sandy Loam 59%,22%, 19% 46 ppm NO3-N
Sample No. _
8FT Depth (165 ppm NO,)
Future L.F.
Parcel 3: Loam 47%,26%,27% 3 ppm NO3-N
Sample No. _
PAR 3 (8 ppm NO3)
(42 inch depth)
Future L.P.
2. PERCOLATION TESTING AND SEPTIC SYSTEM PARAMETERS
Percolation testing was performed in accordance with San Joaquin County Department of
Environmental Health regulations. Test borings for parcels 2 and 5 were drilled February 1 I with
a four-inch diameter hand auger. Two inches of pea gravel and a three inch perforated pipe was
placed in each boring. Twelve inches of tap water was then poured in each boring. The same
procedures were used for the perc tests on parcels 1, 3 and 4, with the perc test borings hand-
drilled on March 4 and perc tested March 5. All test borings were dry and the holes intact at the
start of the testing. The attached Site Plans denotes the location of the percolation tests and the
FIELD PERCOLATION TE5TING REPORT illustrates the perc test results, which are summarized in
the Table below.
5
Chesney Consulting
