Beecher Rd.
Stockton, CA 95215
RE: Nitrate and 1,2-Dibromo 3-chloropropane (DBCP), in your Water Well for 8408 N. Beecher
Rd., Stockton
The Environmental Health Department has received water test results taken by Mike Toy and analyzed
by Precision Enviro-Tech and California Laboratory Services. The samples taken on September 12, 2018
was tested for Nitrate and DBCP on September 12 and September 18, 2018. The results were 15.0 mg/L
for Nitrate as Nitrogen, which is above the MCL of 10 mg/L, and 0.30 pg/L for DBCP, which is above the
MCL of 0.010 pg/L.
The State Department of Health Services adopted a State Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) in drinking
water of 0.10 mg/L-nitrogen for Nitrate and 0.010 pg/L for DBCP; however, private well owners are not
legally required to meet this standard. As a precaution for yourself, members and guests, the
Environmental Health Department would suggest that you have your domestic well tested annually to
verify if the above-described chemical continues to be above state drinking standards.
If your private well analysis for TCP exceeds the MCL of 0.10 mg/L-nitrogen for Nitrate and 0.010 pg/L
for DBCP again, the following alternatives are being provided for your guidance:
1. As a temporary measure, it is recommended that bottled drinking water be used if this well is supplying
drinking water.
2. In cases where exposure may continue indefinitely, such as with contaminated private wells,
installation of a water treatment device, such as a filter, may be advisable. However, using bottled
water or installing a water treatment device at the kitchen water tap, will not stop exposure to TCP in
your private water supply. Most treatment units sold for home installation only treat water at the pgjat
of use, such as the kitchen faucet, and do not prevent exposure through skin contact, bathing or
inhalation. As a result, point of entry filters, which treat water for the entire house, are recommended
because they remove all potential sources of exposure. The "Reverse Osmosis Purification Filter" is
the recommended water treatment device in this case. It operates by passing the well water through
a series of filters and reverse osmosis membranes thereby removing the TCP contaminant. Water
treatment equipment suppliers and installers are listed in your phone directory yellow pages under
"Water Filtration & Purification Equipment."
3. A replacement well is also an alternative for providing uncontaminated water. It is recommended that
a test well be drilled, in order to determine water quality prior to final placement of the well. Water
quality may be determined and monitored through water sample analysis performed by a State
Certified Laboratory.
