F
F
p1 . Introduction
In 1994,in order to satisfy the groundwater related conditions of the Permit No. QX-91-5 (the permit)
issued by San Joaquin County Environmental Health Division in late 1992, Teichert Aggregates retained
Luhdorff and Scalmauini, Consulting Engineers(LSCE)to establish and monitor a network of wells for
groundwater levels and quality in the vicinity of the Teichert Vernalis plant(Figure 1). The objective of
the monitoring program, as presented in the permit, was to document the status of groundwater conditions
within the greater perimeter of the permitted mining area; groundwater was to be monitored on a quarterly
basis and results reported on an annual basis. The area monitored in this program encompasses the seven
permitted mining phases and extends three miles north to south from Kenner Road to the intersection of
}
Interstates 5 and 580 and extends two miles west to cast from Bird Road to Koster Road. The monitoring
I program, initiated in March 1994 and conducted through to the present, includes groundwater level
measurements and groundwater quality sampling and analyses, specifically for general minerals, nitrate,
Fselected metals,and coliform bacteria.
I The groundwater monitoring has been conducted in a network of water supply wells in the area, including
the Vernalis plant primary production wells and neighbors' irrigation and domestic wells, which are
F completed in the alluvial aquifer at varying depths. The initial groundwater monitoring data from the
network wells facilitated the characterization of groundwater level and quality fluctuations prior to
I mining operations. Since the commencement of mining on the Lone Tree II mining phase in 1998,the
monitoring has provided for the continued evaluation of groundwater conditions.
F
SCPINNEDA
{ F
F
Fit
Ft
F
LLHDORFF & SCALMANINI
CONSULTING ENGINEERS 1
i
