5
III. Ground-Water Conditions
In light of community concerns about possible effects of gravel mining on ground water, ground-
water level and quality data have been collected quarterly from the network wells since March 1994
in order to initially characterize pre-mining ground-water conditions beneath the permitted mining
area and to eventually identify any direct effects of aggregate extraction. Also, as part of Teichert's
approved plan to dry-pit mine, monitoring of the ground-water levels provides the necessary input to
establish and maintain a buffer between the base of mining and ground water. Mining of the Lone
Tree H parcel began in 1998 and has proceeded to varying depths in different portions of the parcel:
to an approximate depth of 80 feet in the initial mined area(now used as a silt pond) and 50 feet in
n the current mined area (P. Mercurio,Teichert Aggregates, personal communication, June 5, 2000), to
date well short of the planned mining depth of approximately 150 feet.
The quarterly measurements made during 1994 through early 2000 have been compiled into a table
of ground-water depths and corresponding elevations in each network well. In addition, ground-
water elevation hydrographs for selected wells are presented in this section to illustrate ground-water
conditions beneath the area during the last six years of monitoring activities. Ground-water elevation
contour maps for selected periods are presented in this section to further illustrate recent ground-
water conditions. A table of the corresponding water-quality results from each well sampled is also
presented, as are hydrographs of selected water-quality constituent concentrations in selected wells.
Ground-water elevation hydrographs for each network well, ground-water elevation contour maps
for each spring and fall period, and laboratory analytical data sheets for each well sampled are
included in the Appendix.
S CA
N N
© LUHOORFF & SCALMANINI
CONSULTING ENGINEERS
