E
28
formally recorded on or near the proposed project area.- At the
present time many parts of California have been subject to
cultural resources investigations, but large areas remain to be
examined. For this reason, the absence of recorded cultural
resources in the files of the California Historical Resources
Information System pertaining to a given area does not of itself
constitute cultural resources clearance for a proposed project.
The third method of investigation of the proposed. . g p p project
was to conduct direct field inspection of the project area in
order to locate, identify and record cultural resources and to
assess the potential scientific significance or importance of an
g P Y
cultural resources revealed by direct field inspection or other
methods.
The results of cultural resources investigations of the :
proposed project area, obtained pursuant to application of the
first and second investigative methods, are presented in specific
sections of this report. The results of the third method (direct
field inspection) are given in the following section.
Direct Field Inspection
The proposed project area was examined by a cultural
' resources investigations team led by the writer. The proposed
project, a gravel extraction area, covers approximately 500
acres, and consists of a northeast segment exhibiting an almond
orchard and contemporary gravel plant, and a southwest segment
that contains the remains of a former gravel extraction area, now
a livestockP asture.
Survey Procedure
The CSUS/IAR cultural resources inspection team drove to the
proposed project area via Bird Road, which provides access to
E both project segments. The area was initially inspected by
` driving along the farm roads flanking the edges of the project
area, in order to become familiar with terrain, points of access,
and landmarks. Having completed initial orientation, the survey
team inspected the northeast area by conducting a series of
transects configured to provide general coverage of the segment,
which has been subject to previous cultural resources
E investigations (Canaday et al. 1992 ; Maniery 1985; Moratto et al.
1990) . Since the tract is leveled to agricultural grade, it was
cost-effective and efficient to examine it by means of a
systematic series of parallel transects oriented west to east,
originating at the northeast corner of the project area on Bird
Road and proceeding back and forth between the rows of almond
trees. The survey team inspected the project area . walking in
