.. ..
Cleanup and Restoration
Cleanup should begin as soon as possible after the spilled
material is successfully contained. Many times the characteristics
of oil will change as it is exposed to air , sunlight, and water
action, and cleanup may become more difficult. Professional
cleanup contractors are available, and this option should be
considered in the event of an extensive spill.
The Plant Superintendent should be contacted for assistance in
containing and cleaning up a spill of a hazardous waste or toxic
_ substance. General spill cleanup procedures may be found in the
product MSDS. Where oils are thick enough to be pumped, they
should be. Skimmers are available or easily made to remove as much
product as possible. Absorbents should be used if the slick is too
thin to pump.
Oil trapped along the bank of a stream must be promptly
removed and properly disposed of.
Disposal
Oil recovered during cleanup will be treated in accordance
with the CERCLA or Office of Emergency Services rules and
regulations.
12
