Mr.Jolley
6 August 4, 2004
.PA-0400396 Paget
Beginning January 1, 2004,
f 5.3.1 No person shall install a wood burning -fireplace in a new residential
development with a density greater than two (2) dwelling units per acre.
5.3.2 No person shall install more than two (2) EPA Phase II Certified wood
burning heaters per acre in any new residential development with a density equal
to or greater than three (3) dwelling units per acre.
5.3.3 No person shall install more than one (1) wood burning fireplace or wood
burning heater per dwelling unit in any new residential development with a
density equal to or less than two (2) dwelling units per acre.
There are a number of mitigation measures that should be incorporated into the design of this
project to reduce the overall level of emissions. (Note. Some of the mitigation measures may
already exist as City/County development standards. All other measures should be
implemented to the fullest extent possible).: This list should not be considered all-inclusive. The
District encourages innovation in measures to reduce air quality impacts.
• As many energy conserving and well-designed features as possible should be included in
the design/construction of the project. Examples include (but are not limited to):
Increased wall and ceiling insulation (beyond building code requirements) i
Energy efficient widows (double pane and/or coated) I'
- High-albedo (reflecting) roofing material ]
"Cool Paving"
Energy efficient lighting and appliances
Energy efficient water heaters (such as instantaneous water heaters/indirect water
heaters)
Energy efficient heating/cooling systems (such as radiant heating system)
- Bicycle parking facilities for patrons in a covered secure area
Low or non-polluting landscape maintenance equipment.(e.g. electric lawn mowers, reel
mowers, leaf vacuums, electric trimmers and edgers, etc)
- Electrical outlets around the exterior of the unit to encourage use of electric landscape '.
maintenance equipment
More information can be found at:
t
http://www.l-qc.org http://www.eneLgy.ca..qovlcoolcommunity/strate-gies.htmi #
http.,//eetd.lbl.gov/coolroof/ http://www.cons_u_merenergycenter.org/index.html
http://www.sustainable.doe.gov/
• The applicant should implement programs that further reduce air pollution in the valley such
as encourage patrons to rideshare or carpool to the project site to reduce the amount of
vehicle traffic to and from the project area. This could include provisions of preferential
parking spaces for patrons who participate in carpooling or vanpooling. Check out the
"Spare the Air" section of our website www.valleyair.org
• The project should include as many clean alternative energy features as .possible to
promote energy self-sufficiency. Examples include (but are not limited to): photovoltaic
cells, solar thermal electricity systems, small wind turbines, etc. There are rebate and
incentive programs for alternative energy equipment.
