am Work Plan for Refined Plume Definition and Management of Floating Product-7500 W 11th St., Tracy, CA. Page 68
,..., A Durham Geo F.A.P. PlusTm or equivalent pneumatic floating product skimmer pump
system will be installed in each of the three extraction wells, which will be installed at the
locations shown on Figure 13. The pumps will be powered by a 5-hp electrically-powered air
compressor.
The Durham Geo F.A.P. Plus" skimmer pump system is composed of seven principal
components:
• F.A.P. P1usTM pump
• Skimmer Assembly
• Well Clincher
* Pneumatic Overfill Protection Device
• Filter/Regulator Assembly
• Electric Air Compressor
• Membrane Dryer
The F.A.P. PlusTm pump consists of a flexible inner bladder and a flexible Buna-No hose,
... which forms the outer bladder. The pump, which is capable of producing a suction of 8.35
psi, operates by alternately inflating and deflating the annular space between the inner
bladder and the outer hose. It features an integral pneumatic controller to control the pulsing
+... of the pump bladder. The exhaust air from the pump is discharged out of the top of the well
casing. It is normally set to cycle the pump 15 times per minute, but, when necessary, the
cycling rate can be adjusted to optimize pump operations depending upon the amount and
viscosity of the product present. When compressed air is applied, the inner bladder collapses.
When the air is exhausted, the inner bladder rebounds to its original shape; this, in turn,
causes a suction that pulls fluid into the pump. When air pressure is again applied, a check
valve at the bottom of the pump closes. As the inner bladder is compressed, the contained
fluid opens a second check valve at the top of the pump and fluid is directed out of the well.
The skimmer assembly is attached at the lower end of the pneumatic pump. It consists of a
combined density float, a hydrophobic element, a product by-pass, a hollow guide rod and a
coiled hose. It is able to float freely with its inlet positioned at the water-floating product
- interface. At the center of the float is an intake comprised of a hydrophobic element that
permits only liquid hydrocarbons to pass through it. The float is centered on the hollow,
stainless-steel guide rod and has sufficient clearance to allow it to move freely up and down
the rod in response to changes in water table elevation. The float is connected to the bottom
of the guide rod by a coiled polyurethane hose, which can accommodate changes in
groundwater elevation of up to 2 ft., while, at the same time, retaining the skimmer intake at
the water-product interface. A restraining cable passes through the coiled hose preventing
over-extension or tangling during installation or removal. If, during operation, the skimmer
assembly rises with the water table so that it reaches the upper limits of its permissible travel,
it will activate a high water shut-off unit that, by pneumatic logic, shuts down the pump, but
will permit the pump to restart when the skimmer returns to its normal operating position.
This prevents the pump system from discharging any significant volume of groundwater into
the holding tank in the event that the water table rises before the pump depth can be manually
.. adjusted in the field.
SJC
