Page 3, Kt,ikec, t:1 iZ95
3.4 Well Surveying and Sampling
The elevation of the top of- the PVC casing; in all three wells was surveyed on December 28, 1994.
A notch was cut into the casing for future reference. Atter surveying, the depth to groundwater
was measured in each well using a Sol inst water level meter, and then each well was purged of 10
gallons of'standing water prior to sample collection (Appendix A). A two-stage submersible pump
was used for this purpose. The pump was washed in a TSP solution between wells. During;
purging, the temperature, pH, and conductivity of the water were measured at 2-gallon intervals I
with a Corning Checkmate meter until these parameters stabilized. Samples were collected with a
disposable plastic bailer and placed in 40-m1 vials. After Iabelling; and logging, the samples were
transmitted to McCampbell Analytical for analysis.
4.0 FIELD AND LABORATORY RESULTS
4,1 Sub'su'rface Stratigraphy ;
A downward-coarsening sequence of clay, silt, and sand is present beneath the site. From the
I
surface to a depth of approximately 13 feet, medium to dark-brown organic clay is present in '
KF-1, A strong sewer odor was noted in the 10-foot soil. sample, and fragments of decomposed
plant material were observed. At a depth of 15 feet, the clay is gray-brown to yellow and contains
particles of silt and fine-grained sand. At a depth of 20 feet, very_ dart:-brown organic clay is in
sharp contact with greenish gray-brown clayey silt. Drill cuttings between 20 and 30 feet
suggested further increase in grain size, and brownish-gray silty very-fine-grained sand was
recovered between 28 and 30 feet.
A slightly different sequence was encountered in KF-2. Medium-brown clay is present only to a
depth of approximately 8 feet. From 8 to 12 feet, light brownish-gray silty to slightly clayey
fine-grained sand is present. From 12 to 21 feet, blue-gray silty clay is present, At 21 feet, this
clay is in contact with poorly sorted, silty to medium-grained sand, which is present to the bottom
of the boring at 30 feet.,
4.2 Depth to Groundwater
i
Damp soil was encountered in both borings throughout most of the sampled interval. The
brownish-gray silty clay at 15 feet in KF-2 was somewhat drier, however. Saturated soil was I
drilled at approximately 18 feet in both wells.
4
When the three wells were monitored on December 28, the depth to groundwater was
i'
approximately 19 Beet. Measurements are tabulated in Table 1.
i
i
G
I
