PUBLIC PfEALTHSERVttlS OP,QUI/y
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DIVISION t
Karen Furst, M.D., M.P.H., Health Officer `, P
304 East Weber Avenue, Third Floor • Stockton, CA 9520
209/468-3420
AM 12 M
Piedmont Lumber&Mill Company
395 Taylor Blvd. Suite 225
Pleasant Hill CA 94523
RE: Piedmont Lumber&M111 Company Site Code: 506243
7777 W. Eleventh Street
Tracy CA 95376
As a result of reviewing the preliminary site assessment workplan submitted by John P. Cummings &
Associates dated August, 12 1997 and historical site specific data which confirms the existence of
petroleum products in the subsurface environment at the above referenced site, San Joaquin County Public
Health Services Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD) provides the following comments and
directives:
1. The proposed location of the monitoring well east of the former tank area should be mid-way between
the former tank location and the drinking water well.
2. Number 4 of the workplan indicates that you will be taking "approximately 6" soil samples. Soil
samples should be collected at five foot intervals until a PID field monitor and field observations
indicate that the vertical extent of the contamination has been defined.
3. Soil samples from the capillary fringe and below should be analyzed for ether and alcohol using EPA
method 8260 (Specifically Methanol, Ethanol, Tertiary Butanol (TB), MTBE, Di-isopropyl ether
(RIPE), and Tertiary Amyl Methyl Ether (TAME)). Results of these analyses must be reported at
method detection limits in order to confirm the presence or absence of these petroleum additives.
Once field activities are completed and prior to submittal of the soil samples to the laboratory, PHS/EHD
must be contacted in order to discuss which soil samples will undergo analysis. The summary report should
include a table of all soil and ground water sample results obtained from the site and any recommendations
for further investigation and/or remediation.
Should you have questions regarding this correspondence please contact Bruce Askanas at(209)468-0331.
Donna Heran,REHS,Director
Environmental Health Division
Bruce Askanas, Sr.REHS Mazgare agorio,Supervisor
Site Mitigation Unit Site Mitigation Unit
cc: John P.
