It is our understanding that these wells
supply water for the neighboring concrete aggregate operation, Calaveras Cement. Two
wells feed water to a surge tank from which water is drawn on demand. Some water is
used for the lavatories is obtained through an agreement with Calaveras Cement from the
property owners to the west, who has an industrial well used in concrete batch operations.
Wright's scope of work included collection of water samples from the Calaveras Cement
well (Water Well), located at 8181 11th Street (just east of and adjacent to the M&M
warehouse building).
The PHS EHD desired that each well be sampled from spigots attached to the individual
wells. A Wright technician cut into the lines to attach these spigots and the samples were
collected. A PHS EHD representative observed the sample collection. The water
.. samples were collected after first clearing the faucet for about 5 minutes; the laboratory
prepared containers containers were filled with minimum cavitation and headspace. The
water sample was labeled, logged onto a chain-of-custody form, and placed in a chilled
ice chest on crushed ice.
Groundwater Conditions
Groundwater occurred at depths of about 7-8 feet (see Table 1). A northwesterly
groundwater flow direction was plotted from the monitoring well data under a gradient of
0.009 (see Figures 1 and 2).
Chemical Analysis
Five groundwater samples were analyzed at a Chromalab, Inc., a State certified analytical
laboratory from the monitoring and domestic wells. These samples were tested for the
following; Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as Gasoline (TPHG) and Diesel (TPHD),
Benzene (B), Toluene (T), Ethylbenzene (E) and Xylene (X), Methyl-tert-butyl-ether
(MTBE) and fuel oxygenates, 1,2 Dichloroethane and Ethylene Dibromide using EPA
Methods 3510/8015, 8020, 8240 and 8260. The analyses were run on a "normal"
turnaround (five- to ten working days). The results are tabulated and presented in Tables
'+' 1 and 2 below.
Page 2
