The nitrate concentration of rainfall was estimated to be 1 mg/L-N (Hantzsche and
Finnemore. 1992).
Quantity and Quality of Domestic Wastewater
According to the Site Approval Application, the proposed church will be open each
Sunday from 8:30 until noon. One minister and five to eight volunteers are anticipated
to run the services. The minister and his family live on the Site and are discussed
below. For the purposes of the flow calculation, the volunteers are included among the
195 parishioners anticipated for services. No pre-school is proposed, a nursery will be
preseenf for the-supervision of children during services. In addition to regular services,
weelkly meetings wTi1 I elieTcTTor choir pracTice an-d-Fible study. Monthly meetings will
include the Church council, Elder's meeting, Stewardship committee, Evangelism
committee, and Sunday School teachers' meeting (five monthly meetings). The
attendance for these weekly and monthly events would be from three to ten people per
event.
The estimated sewage flow rates for various uses are available from a number of
references. The uses presented below were guided by the San Joaquin County On-Site
Wastewater Disposal Standards (2003). Crites and Tchobanoglous (1998), and EPA
(1980). The Wastewater Disposal Standards indicate 5 gallons per seat is the typical
flow for a church with no kitchen. We understand ffia-,a`lthough a kitchen will be
located in the chhu—rcTi, i wt pn'ma-rily be used to refrigerate or reheat already-prepared
meals. Very rarely will food be prepared on-site. Crites and Tchobanoglous indicate 3
gallons per seat is the typical use for an assembly hall. Five gallons per day per seat is
a commonly used factor for a church facility and was selected for this project.
The estimated flow values discussed here should not be used for the design and sizing
of the septic system. The design and sizing of the septic system should utilize the San
Joaquin County Environmental Health Department's On-Site Wastewater Disposal
Standards which incorporate peak and surge flow factors. The estimates used in the
On-Site Wastewater Disposal Standards may be greater than those discussed here.
The nitrate as nitrogen (N) concentration of these uses is estimated to be 85-mg/L
(Crites and Tchobanoglous, 1998).
In addition to the church uses, the existin (hree-bedn
room residece .Warsonage) is
considered for the nitrate loading. We estimate a maximum use of 120 gallons per day
per bedroom for the residence. A typical residential concentration of 45 mg/L of nitrate
as N is selected (Crites and Tchobanoglous, 1998).
LOGE 1124 Page 10
