The nitrate concentration of rainfall was estimated to be 1 mg/L-N (Hantzsche and
Finnemore, 1992).
✓/Quantity and Quality of Domestic Wastewater
The estimated sewage flow rates for various uses are available from a number of
references. The uses presented below were guided by the San Joaquin County On-Site
Wastewater Disposal Standards (2003), Crites and Tchobanoglous (1998), and EPA
(1980). The references indicate that 13 gallons for each employee is typical for an office
worker, and 5 gallons is typical for a bar customer (Crites and Tchobanoglous, 1998).
The estimated flow values discussed here should not be used for the design and sizing
of the septic system. The design and sizing of the septic system should utilize the San
Joaquin County Environmental Health Sewage Standards which incorporate peak and
surge flow factors. The estimates used in the Sewage Standards may be greater than
those discussed here.
According to the Site Approval Application, the proposed small winery will have
employees and customers. At the Phase II expansion, there may be up to 10
customers per shift, Thursday to Sunday. One employee may work Thursday to
Sunday for wine tasting. Two employees may work a 5-day workweek. No marketing
events will occur.
The nitrate as nitrogen .(N) concentration of these uses is estimated to be 85-mg/L
(Crites and Tchobanoglous, 1998). A-,
In addition to the*nery uses, two existing residences (4 bedrooms and 3 bedrooms)
and one proposed mobile home residence (2 bedrooms) are considered for the nitrate
loading. Considering th,maximum potential build out of residential units, we estimate a
maximum use of 120 gallons per day per bedroom for all existing and proposed
residential units. A typical residential concentration of 45 mg/L of nitrate as N is
selected (Crites and Tchobanoglous, 1998).
No contribution from the vineyard irrigation or soil amendments are considered for the
Hantzsche/Finnemore method. It is reasonably assumed that the irrigation and soil
amendments would be applied at close to agronomic rates for a net balance of plant
irrigation and nutrients.
The maximum average daily flow for the Site was estimated to be 1,134.5 gallons per
day (gpd). Through the use of a weighted average, the average concen -ation of all the
different effluent flows and concentrations was determined to be 46.9 g/L-N at 1,134.5
gallons per day. Please see the following tables that present the information in a
tabular form.
LOGE0915 Page 10
