VALLEY AG
R E S E A R C H
June 5, 1999
FOR: Frank& Carol Borba
13845 South Brennan Road
Escalon, CA 95320
PROJECT: New F&C Borba Dairy Facility
NWC Escalon-Belota Road and Dodds Road - Escalon
SUBJECT: Holding Pond Sizing and On-Site Soil Characteristics
The San Joaquin County Department of Environmental Health has requested data and
information on two parameters of the wastewater holding pond for the new F & C Borba Dairy.
Specifically, the Department wants assurance that the holding pond has sufficient capacity as
designed, and secondly, that the indigenous on-site soil characteristics will support a 1:1 inside '
embankment slope.
HOLDING POND REQUIRED CAPACITY (ESTIMATED)
PROJECTIONS: The following information is supplemental to the attached"SIZING A
DAIRY MANURE HOLDING POND WORKSHEET." The proposed dairy may ultimately
milk 1,000 Holsteins, with the support stock numbers referenced. Dry manure will be used as 1
bedding with the remaining volume sold for off-site use. Wastewater storage duration during the
rainy months must be 120 days (December-March). Solids separation will be accomplished by
three separation basins to maximize separation and minimize solids accumulation in holding
pond. Separation basin storage capacity for solids and liquids is not considered in the
calculations. Solids separation by the separation basins is estimated at 65%. Rainfall runoff
from roofed areas will be pipelined to the cropland. Majority of the concrete areas will be
covered.
HOLDING POND CALCULATED CAPACITY
The holding pond is proposed to be 650 ft long, 125 ft wide and 20 feet deep with a five foot
above grade embankment for a total depth of 25 feet. Freeboard to be two feet. Inside slope is to
be 1:1 and outside slope to be 3:1. Embankment road to be approximately 14 feet wide. The
following formula determines the capacity of the proposed holding pond:
UNIT ABBREVIATIONS
LW=Liquid width, ft - . . -, LW=EW- 2 x FB x S
EW=Earthen holding pond width, ft ' LL _ EL - 2 x FB x S
FB =Freeboard, ft LD =ED - FB
S = Side slope (1;1 horizontal:vertical)
LL=Liquid length, ft
EL=Earthen holding pond length, ft
LD=Liquid depth, ft
ED=Earthen holding pond depth, ft —
P.O.Box 3794 Turlock,California 95381 (209)668-1403 1 Fax (209)668-2598
