III. NITRATE LOADING STUDY FINDINGS
A. WASTEWATER FLOW PROJECTIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS
The characteristics of the wastewater flow will bean indeterminable mixture of blackwater and
gray water volumes. Food preparation is proposed which will probably increase organic loading
and consequently nitrate loading. All food and food by-product wastes must be handled as solid
wastes and not be disposed of into the septic system. This will prevent concentrated organic
loading and prolong the lifespan of the future wastewater disposal system.
It is also important that no industrial or commercial chemicals, solvents, excessive cleaners, etc.
are introduced into the septic system, as well as other items such as any paper products other than
toilet paper, cloth, plastic, cigarettes, etc. However, it is recognized that this is extremely difficult
with public restrooms.
A number of variables are involved in estimating wastewater Average Daily Flows (ADF) from a
commercial facility. Wastewater flow volume projections for facilities in unsevered areas of San
Joaquin County have been historically and typically calculated under one or more the following
guidelines:
1. Data published in the San Joaquin County Sewage Standards.
2. Data published in the scientific literature.
3. Number of bathroom fixtures for a facility, leading to calculated bathroom use per capita.
4. Number of parking spaces for a facility.
5. Maximum number of known people on-site (e.g., employees, customers, etc.).
6. Historical wastewater flow data from an existing or comparable facility.
The San Joaquin County Sewa e Standards is specific about wastewater flows from facilities such
as Stores/Markets. The Standards assign 150 gallons per toilet fixture for"Stores"with employee
and customer use. It is niy understanding there is one toilet for the unisex public restroom, and
one unisex toilet for employee use inside the store. These two toilets produce an Average Daily
Flow (ADF) of 300 gallons per day(gpd). With modern, low-flow toilets at 1.5 gallons pet flush
means that each toilet would have to be flushed 100 times each day to meet the assigned standard.
B. CALCULATED NITRATE-NITROGEN LOADING
NLS§3.yhe calculated or estimated nitrate-nitrogen impact to the soil and ultimately to the groundwater
is difficult to determine due to the number of variables involved. These variables include 1.) Variability in
wastewater flows, nitrogen concentrations and dilution effects that may occur, 2.) Impact from previous on-
site operations, 3.)Upgtadient nitrate sources from agricultural farmland, 4.) Changes in groundwater
directional flow and elevation, 5.)Denitrification potential within the soil environment and within the
confined and unconfined aquifers 6.)Potential landscape uptake of nitrogen, and 7.)Rainfall recharge.
8
Chesney Consulting
