The EPA has
established a 24-hour reentry interval for crop areas treated with emulsifiable concentrate or
wettable powder formulations of chlorpyrifos unless workers wear protective clothing. Products
containing chlorpyrifos bear the Signal Word WARNING or CAUTION, depending on the toxicity
of the formulation.
According to EXTOXNET, paraquat is a quaternary nitrogen herbicide classified as an RUP and a
highly toxic compound in EPA toxicity class I. Many cases of illness and/or death have been
reported in humans. The compound is moderately toxic to birds and many aquatic organisms.
The chemical is highly persistent in the soil environment, with reported field half-lives of greater
than 1000 days. Studies have shown the half life in water to be as fast as 13.1 hours and up to
23 weeks.
According to EXTOXNET, GUP simazine is a selective triazine herbicide classified as highly toxic
if inhaled, moderately toxic if ingested, and slightly toxic via dermal exposure. Simazine is
persistent, does not adsorb strongly to soil particles, and has a lengthy soil half-life; these
factors suggest a potential for groundwater contamination.
Information regarding fenbutatin-oxide was not readily available on both EXTOXNET and the
PMEP. The EPA website? was searched for more information regarding this chemical.
According to an EPA article entitled R.E.D Facts" and dated September 1994, "fenbutatin-oxide
is a miticide or acaricide used to control mites, aphids, thrips, mealybugs, whiteflies and scale."
It has a "calculated half-lives range from 271 days to 1367 days in different States and soils.
This long half-life causes residue levels to increase with each successive application." "Although
fenbutatin-oxide is persistent, residues do not tend to accumulate in crops planted in previously
treated soils." Fen butatin-oxide is classified as a highly toxic compound under EPA "Toxicity
Category I ... for eye irritation effects." It is "very highly toxic to freshwater, estuarine and
marine and invertebrates."
In conclusion, agricultural records indicate RUP chemicals including chlorpyrifos, fenbutatin-
oxide, paraquat dichloride, and simazine have been applied to the property. No evidence was
found, however, to indicate that the chemicals were applied inappropriately. These records do
not change the conclusions and recommendations contained in the original report.
LIMITATIONS
This report was compiled as a Surface and Subsurface Contamination Report for the subject
property. This report contains information and data provided to NOA by several sources. NOA
in no way warrants the accuracy or completeness of the information provided to this
investigation by those sources.
It should be noted that when an environmental assessment is completed without sample
collection and quantitative analysis of soil and groundwater beneath the site, as in this study,
http://www.epa.gov
e http://www.epa.gov/oppsrrdi/REDS/factsheets/0245fact.pdf
902 Industrial Way•Lodi, G4 95240
209.367.3701 -Fax 209.333.8303 02009 Nell 0.Anderson&Associates,Inc.
