Drilling proceeded as described above. At a depth of 65-
feet, grout from SB-101 began flooding into the current boring. The grout either migrated
through the porous sediments or there was enough deflection in the boring that the drill bit
entered the previous boring. The boring was grouted through the drilling rods with a neat
cement grout.
To avoid further problems, the drill rig was moved 10-feet east of MW-101 and drilling
.• proceeded as earlier described. The well was successfully installed at a depth of 89-feet
bgs.
. 2.1.1 Soil Sampling Procedure
Soil samples were collected for geological and analytical evaluation at five-foot intervals in
the two water table wells. MW-101 was to be free drilled to a depth of 75 feet since it was
drilled adjacent to MW-1. Soil samples were then to be collected at five-foot intervals from
75 feet to total depth. The first attempt at MW-101 was terminated at 115 feet bgs and the
boring renamed SB-101; all sampling was performed in this boring. MW-101 was free
drilled.
A boring log providing sediment description using the USCS and field observations was
maintained by a professional geologist working under the supervision of a registered
geologist. Soil samples were collected in 6.0-inch brass liners using a 2.0-inch modified
California split spoon sampler. All soil samples were sealed with Teflon sheets, capped
with plastic end caps, labeled, and placed in a cooler at 4° Celsius for transport to the
laboratory following Chain of Custody protocol. The OVM was used to screen the soil
-• samples.
Details on the geology encountered during the completion of the soil sampling as well as the
field observations are included in Section 3.2, Geology and Field Observations.
2.1.2 Soil Laboratory Analyses
Five soil samples from MW-4 and MW-5 and four soil samples from SB-101 were
submitted to Sherwood Laboratories of Hilmar, California (State Certified Laboratory
#1400) for the following analysis:
• Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene(BTEX) by EPA method 8020
• Gasoline-range petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH-G) by EPA method 8015(m)
• Methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) by EPA method 8020
Two soil samples from each boring were sub-sampled and sent to Entech Analytical Labs,
Inc. of Santa Clara, California (State Certified Laboratory#2346) for the following analysis:
• Oxygenated fuel compounds (MTBE, DIPE, ETBE, TAME and TBA) by EPA
,. method 8260
A chain of custody was completed for all samples submitted and tracked to ensure sample
integrity.
ti..
