March 15, 1999
All non-disposable sampling equipment was decontaminated using a steam cleaner before
•r and between uses. 'Disposable gloves were used while collecting all samples and were
changed with each sampling event.
,+ A chain of custody document, listing all samples collected, accompanied the samples from
field to laboratory, thereby providing a means to track their movement and insure their
integrity.
1.4 Soil and Groundwater Sample Analyses
The following summarizes the sample testing used for this phase of work. The samples were
. submitted to a licensed analytical laboratory (Sherwood Laboratories in Hilmar) and
analyzed for the following:
• Benzene, Toluene, Ethyl Benzene & Xylene (BTEX by EPA method 80201602)
• Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as Gasoline (TPH-G by EPA method 5030/8015(m))
.. • The fuel oxygenate suite (MTBE, ETBE, TAME, DIPE & TBA by EPA method 8260)
• The 61 foot soil sample from HP-5 was run for the full 8260 scan.
A summary of the lab data is attached in Table 1 of Appendix A and the lab data reports are
attached in Appendix C.
V
2.0 RESULTS OF INVESTIGATION
.. The six hydropunch/boreholes were installed as planned and the following information was
gathered.
2.1 Geology and Hydrogeology of the Site
The dominant soil type in the upper 60 feet of subsurface geologic soils investigated is sand,
with fine to coarse-grained texture. Varying amounts of silt and silty sand were encountered
from borehole to borehole. A couple non-continuos clay layers were encountered in a few of
the boreholes.
Groundwater was encountered at 60-61 feet. The capillary fringe did not appear to extend up
very far. The soil was generally moist from the surface to the groundwater interface.
A hydrocarbon odor was observed in HP-1 and HP-5 from the surface down to total depth.
Both HP-2 and HP-3 exhibited a slight solvent type odor at 55 feet, which was probably
result of MTBE. HP-4 showed moderate OVM readings and HP-6 showed low OVM
readings at 50 and 55 feet.
A geologic cross section is included as Figure 3 and the boring logs are included in Appendix
B.
2.2 Chemical Distribution
Data Table 91, enclosed as Appendix A, summarizes the soil and hydropunch sample
,,. analyses collected in this portion of the property. Lab test results corroborate well with field
observations and are discussed below.
4
