Y
IV. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
It is our opinion the mound system proposed for this project and patterned after the mound
system as described in the EPA Design Manual, is suitable for its intended purpose of managing
septic effluent originating from the Gurudawara Temple. An estimated 85% reduction in nitrate-
nitrogen loading is anticipated from the referenced design parameters and has been documented
in the above calculations. Nitrate-nitrogen loading projected on an areal basis reduces nitrate
impact to lower levels.
Wastewater flow projections are based on "upper medium-to-maximum" anticipated flow
rates. A 100% replacement mound area has been incorporated into the design as requested
by and in compliance with, Environmental Health Department requirements. If failure of
the proposed system should occur prior to the activation of the 100% replacement mound
area, it will be a requirement of the Environmental Health Department to install a flow
meter to quantify the influent and increase the mound system design accordingly. We are
recommending that chemical(portable) toilets be used on special occasions where there will
be an excess number of people during, or other than, Sunday services.
Without sophisticated groundwater monitoring over a long period of time, it is unknown as to the
exact groundwater depth at various times of the year, as well as the exact groundwater directional
flow. However, sufficient data has been collected and analyzed to determine that the
groundwater table is currently an acceptable distance below grade for there to be adequate
biological treatment, according to published scientific literature. This acceptable distance is
normally referenced to be five feet between the soil/effluent interface and the highest anticipated
depth to groundwater.
Effluent mounding effects under the proposed mounds may be of a concern since the
permeability of the native soil is very slow and the saturated zone comparatively high in
elevation. Adjustments may have to be made to the 100%replacement area design if mounding
effects occur.
Accurate "as-builts" of the installed mound system must be supplied to the Environmental Health
Department and all applicable "distance" requirements must be strictly adhered to. There is to be
no parking or storage of material within the mound perimeter.
The proposed mound system should be oriented away from the existing leachfield, if practical or
possible.
7
ValTey Ag Ppearch
