Kirkman Residence (P-39-4313)
The northernmost documented cultural resource site in the survey area consists of the 1930s Kirkman residence
(site number P-39-4313). Situated near the intersection of Mountain House Parkway and Byron Road(i.e.,the
Pornbo property), this adobe house and associated outbuildings, structures, and plantings was constructed starting
in 1931.The house was originally built for William`Billy"Kirkman, an almond grower and nursery owner. The
house and 2 acres of surrounding property were split from the larger Kirkman holdings and sold separately in
200 1.Although Mr. Kirkman was a prominent local figure, the property does not possess the integrity or
association necessary for eligibility to the CRHR,based on in-field assessment of resource integrity and
documentary research(Peak and Associates 2001).
Berkeley Farms Dairy Barn
Located northwest of the Grant Line Road and Mountain House Parkway intersection are a number of mid—late
20th century buildings and structures along Mountain House Parkway associated with the presently operating
Berkeley Farms Dairy.None of these buildings and structures were recorded as cultural resources, nor have they
been evaluated as to their historic significance per the CRHR.However, a single large barn possesses elements of
architecture, materials, and condition indicative of the early decades of the 1900s.
To preliminarily determine the eligibility of the barn for inclusion in the CRHR,an EDAW cultural-resource
specialist conducted a field examination of the barn and documentary research to determine when the barn was
constructed and if there were any significant historical associations with the barn and surrounding property.Tax
assessor's records indicates that this barn appears to have been constructed around 1919-1920. Additional
research concluded that, while the barn is an excellent example of the kind of agriculture-related buildings that
were constructed in the early decades of the 20th century,it possesses no unique features that would set it apart
from numerous similar buildings that exist throughout the region. In addition, although the Berkeley Farms Dairy
may have been an important local operation,it does not possess any significant historical associations that would
qualify it for inclusion in the CRHR.
Lucky J Dairy Complex
This complex of dairy-related buildings and structures was recorded by Jensen(2004)and is located immediately
southwest of the intersection of Grant Line Road and Mountain House Parkway. Although not recorded as a
historic resource because of its relatively recent age,one building on the property has the potential to be
considered a historic resource. This building, the Lucky J operations headquarters building, dates to 1954 and was
constructed in the Modeme architectural style popular from the 1930s through the early years of the 1950s.Most
of the related structures are of recent construction;the 1954 dairy headquarters/office appears to be the oldest
building on the property.
Although the dairy may have been an important local business,it did not have a major economic impact on the
region or the state and was typical of numerous dairy farms that existed in the area and still operate today. There
is also no evidence that any significant historical events took place on or near the Lucky J property or that any
historically significant individuals are directly associated with the operation or designed or built the 1954
headquarters building. In addition, although the headquarters building is an excellent example of the Moderne
style of architecture, other existing buildings constructed in this style are more important examples of this design
school. As such, neither the Lucky J dairy office building nor other structures or buildings associated with the
operation are considered eligible for inclusion in the CRHR.
Grant Line Road/Lincoln Highway
The present-day Grant Line Road in and near the College Park project site is part of the original 1915 Lincoln
Highway;the fust marked coast-to-coast interstate roadway. The 1915 Lincoln Highway, consisting of a route
patched together from pre-existing roads and newly built"seedling miles"intended to spur growth, started in
College Park at Mountain House Spec'rfic Plan III Draft EIR EDAW
San Joaquin County 4.6-7 Cultural Resources
