F
nitrogen concentration of wastewater in mg NIL
on(%)of nitrate-nitrogen loss due to denitrification in the soil
age recharge rate of rainfall - inches per yr
ground nitrate-nitrogen concentration of rainfall recharge, exclusive of wastewaterences (ppm NO3-N)
Values and Assumptions
1.) The total number of people to visit the facility daily has been derived from the Demographics
Chart on Page 3.
2.) The decrease in nitrate concentration in the water table between the upgradient and
downgradient test pits, in relation to the assumed groundwater flow under the filter beds
is 42%. It is unknown if this is attributable to denitrification. However, a denitrification
percentage of 35%will be applied in the following equation:
1=340 people x 15 gals/person/d x365 d/vr= 1,861,500 gals=total W W/vr=248,864 cu fr= 1.24 in/yr
2.27+52.84 Ac x 43,560 sq ft/Ac x (1 ft/12 in)
Nw= 103 mg N/L
d = Assume 35% due to direct observation and the indigenous clay soils
R = 11 in/yr.
Nb= Assumed to be 0.1 ppm NO3-N
1.24 in/yr(103mg N/L) (1 - 0.35) + (11 in/yr x 0.1 mg/L)
Nr = (1.24 in/yr+ 11 in/yr)
Nr = 6.9m asnitrate-nitrogen(N0,-N) or30.6 ppmas nitrate (NO3)
H. EXISTING SEPTIC SYSTEM COMPONENTS
The possibility of future design or operational changes to the existing septic system, and design
requirements for the proposed Truck Stop will be based upon the factors of operation, longevity,
and environmental protection. The San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department will
stipulate design requirements for compliance with these factors. Septic system designs approved
by EHD have included package treatment plants, denitrifying septic tanks, dual septic tank
systems, recirculating sand filters, mound systems, innovative filter beds and shallow leachfields.
9
Chemey Consulting
