EO'd _INioi
June 1, 1999
S.J. County Development Dept.
Attn, Kerry Sullivan
18 10 Hazelton Ave.
Stockton, Ca_ 95205
Dear Kerry:
I am a resident of the area in which there has been an on-going dispute over the proposed labor camp
by Mr. Rios. I am opposed to such development for the following reasons. 1)A labor camp is already
functioning on Harney lane. 2) Since repair of Harney Lane, traffic speed and frequency has almost
doubled. 3)As a deputy sheriff I am well aware of the expected drain on law enforcement resources this
will bring. To elaborate further,I know that on a regular basis, there is only one deputy assigned to the
north county beat(everything north of S mile road). And it isn't all that uncommon to have no law
enforcement presence in the northern part of the county at all. Staff is normally shifted into local (Stockton)
areas because of greater visibility and a perception on the part of supervisors that the need is greater in the
local beats. Labor camps around our facilities in French Camp are a significant drain on our manpower. We
have routine calls of"shots fired","911 hang-ups","fights","gang activity"etc. right across the street from
our office. Why should we not expect the same thing at this new site.
This project has been turned down once before. It should be made clear to Mr. Rios that the area residents
don't want this in their back yard nor do we want the problems that arc bound to come with it. It is also
interesting to note that Mr.Rios lives in Acampo and not in the area where he wants to builds this camp.
I wonder why ?
Sijurel ;
n .
