May 25, 2004 <br /> NOA Project Number: E0406 IA <br /> Page 6 <br /> 4.3 Potential Ground Water Contamination Issues <br /> ` Identifying potential ground-water contamination sources was not part of the scope of work for <br /> the soil suitability study. Potential ground-water contamination can occur from a number of <br /> sources which often include leaky underground storage tanks, agricultural activities, dairies, <br /> septic systems, storm water infiltration etc. Agricultural activities, dairies, and the use of septic <br /> systems in the area should be considered potential ground-water contamination sources. <br /> The Site is currently used as pasture land for cattle. A turkey farm lies within the parcels which <br /> have been carved out of the southern half of the Site. <br /> The Phase I Environmental Site Assessment prepared by Geo-Phase Environmental of Modesto <br /> (March 19,2004)was reviewed. This report made the following statement about potential <br /> groundwater contamination at the Site: <br /> In areas of intense animal activity such as high-density dairies, animal waste can <br /> result in nitrate impact to groundwater. Installations most likely to result in excess <br /> '- nitrate loading are feed lots and animal waste "lagoons. " At this site, the ponds <br /> do not appear to be significantly loaded with animal wastes as demonstrated by the <br /> abundance offora and fauna. The low density of animals ... makes the potential <br /> for a nitrate impact quite low. <br /> 4.4 Well Water Sample Location <br /> Three water samples were collected from the faucet of the on-site water well on May 18, 2004 by <br /> ` Ms. Abigail Racco of our office. The location of the well is indicated in Plate 1. <br /> 4.5 Well Water Sample Collection, Handling, and Transportation <br /> The samples were collected in a clean plastic container, then decanted into clean, glass vials. <br /> The samples were then transported on ice and immediately remanded under chain of custody to <br /> Precision Enviro-Tech, Stockton. The Chain of Custody document has been included in the <br /> appendix of this report. <br /> �- 4.6 Well Water Sample Analytical Results <br /> L Nitrate was found at 7.43 mg/L-NO31 well below the maximum contaminant level set by the <br /> United States Environmental Protection Agency of 45 mg/L-NO3. DBCP was not detected in the <br /> water sample.
