/ Consequently, the number of plumbing fixtures within the on-site Bathrooms will be used to
calculate average daily flows (ADFs). For the nitrate loading generated from the entire facility, the
Bathroom(Restroom) Site Plan in Appendix B illustrates that only five buildings out of a total of 18
buildings have Bathrooms. The following is a list of the Buildings with Bathrooms and the
corresponding number of fixtures:
Building G: 16 toilets, 16 lavatories; Men's/Women's(Proposed)
Building I-1: 4 toilets,4 lavatories; Men's/Women's
Building O: 2 toilets,2 lavatories; Men's/Women's
Building N: 2 toilets,2 lavatories; Men's/Women's
Building M: 2 toilets,2 lavatories; Men's/Women's
TOTALS =26 toilets, 26 lavatories
I
The ADF from the entire facility, as one APN Parcel, will be based on an assumed maximum fixture
usage of 2x/hr:
52 fixtures x 2 gals/use(1.5 gals flush+ 0.5 gals hand washing)= 104 gals/use x 2 uses/hr=208 gals/hr x 8 hr/workday
= 1,664 gals/day x 5 days/wk= 8,320 gals/wk x 50 work weeks/yr=416,000 gals/yr. This figure will
be used for the yearly wastewater generation for the nitrate loading calculations below.
For the design and operational parameters for effluent disposal generated exclusively from the
retrofitted Restrooms in Building G, the following quantifies the ADF from the building which has
a greater number of fixtures than the other Restrooms within the facility: 16 toilets+ 16 lavatories=
32 x 2 gals/use(u gals flush+ os gals hand washing)= 64 gals/use x 1 use/hr= 64 gals/hr x 8 hr/workday= 512
gals/day. This ADF figure will be used in the disposal design parameters.
Wastewater Characteristics
Consideration of the domestic wastewater generated from the entire facility; blackwater will
originate from toilets and greywater from hand washing. There should be no high organic loading
from kitchen use, etc. Additional wastewater constituents may consist of other liquids to the
system, such as coffee, juices, low strength cleaning liquids, etc. No industrial or commercial
chemicals, solvents, etc. should ever be introduced into the wastewater treatment system. It is
imperative that low strength and low volumes of cleaners are used in the Restrooms since they can
disrupt the septic tank biology.
The scientific literature cites nitrogen concentrations in domestic septic effluent typically ranging
from 17 mg N/L for basins, sinks, etc.to 140 mg N/L for toilet wastes. A value of 62 mg N/L is
typically used for domestic calculations, as indicated in the scientific literature (See Kaplan-septic
Systems Handbook,Pg. 147), based upon a mixture of the concentrations referenced above.
LLI
Page -6-
Chesney Consulting
