r
5
4 0 SOIL BORING AND SAMPLING
Soil boring and sampling methodology for this phase of work was presented in
Canonie's Work Plan All soil boring and well locations were based on the results of
the soil vapor survey and information obtained during drilling activities
t4 1_. Soil Boring and Sampling Methodolony
Ten soil borings were advanced in the area of the former tanks to depths ranging from
31 5 to 45 5 feet between September 28, 1992, and October 2, 1992 Six of these
' soil borings (W-1 through W-6) were converted to vadose zone wells Boring and well
locations are shown on Figure 2 Although the original proposal called for four soil
borings and four 4-inch-diameter wells to depths of approximately 40 feet, field
screening results required field changes to be made to the proposed work
Drilling was performed by Spectrum Exploration Drilling, Inc of Stockton, California
' Six vadose zone wells and four soil borings were drilled with a truck-mounted CME
550 drill rig using a 6- to 10-inch outside diameter (OD) hollow-stem auger Soil
samples were collected using an 18-inch long, 2-inch inside diameter (1D) split-barrel
sampler The sampler was driven in advance of the auger by a 140-pound weight
falling 30 inches The number of blows required to drive the sampler 18 inches was
1 recorded on the Boring Logs for each 6-inch interval Drilling operations were
supervised by a geological engineer, who visually described and lithologically logged
the soil samples in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System at the time
of recovery Boring Logs are presented in Appendix C All augers and samplers were
steam-cleaned before being mobilized to the site, between each boring, and prior to
leaving the site to prevent cross-contamination Cuttings generated during drilling
operations were placed in 55-gallon drums, which were labeled and stored on-site for
future disposal
W V81 6341REPORTS151TE A551LOCKEFORDVLOCKEFORD RPT fAprll 26 19931
GSnonieE nv l ron menta!
