There are two additional sources of information which document and define past land use,
although they are sometimes difficult to interpret. The first is the use of aerial photographs.
Aerial photographs of the subject area in the 1970's from USDA Soil Maps show the existing
hornesite structure on the subject property and an apparent barn to the south of this homesite,
which was demolished approximately 10 years ago. The second source of information can be
found on USGS maps. The 1978 USGS Union Island Quadrangle map for this area shows these
structures, and no other buildings.
INFORMATION FROM SITE RECONNAISSANCE AND INTERVIEWS
The following information was obtained visually and/or through an interview and on-site
inspection with Mr. Eric Hayes on December 28, 2000: From an environmental perspective, the
entire company operations are operated under exemplary conditions. The facility contains no
USTs. According to Mr. Hayes, there were no USTs when the property was purchased from Mr.
Bastian. There is one aboveground storage tank (AST) containing diesel, which is used to refuel
the trucks. Minor diesel fuel spillage has occurred on the surrounding containment wall.
As noted on the attached Soil Survey map, the subject property is composed of the Merritt silty
clay loam soil type (#197). The on-site, conventional septic system consists of aseptic tank and
a leachfield area with no sumps or pits due to the high water table. This system serves the office ti
and repair shop. Effluent percolation would be expected to be slower in this clay loam soil,
although there have never been any problems with the septic system.
The farming operations to the east of the property are conducted by Bacchetti and Pombo Farms.
Agrichemical applications are done by the farmer or by a custom applicator. With agrichemical
application laws and regulations in effect, there is reasonable assurance that pest management
material will be applied correctly and accurately to its intended target with minimal drift. It may
be a very slight possibility that minute volumes of pesticide drift originate from surrounding
acreage during aerial and/or ground applications.
I
Adjacent to the north is the Pescadero Golf Driving Range, which is owned by Mr. Hayes. He
stated that no pesticides are applied to the driving range grass, with fertilizers as the only applied
agrichemical. Fertilizers are applied carefully, at prescribed intervals.
No leakage was observed from the on-site power pole transformers and they most likely do not
contain polychloride biphenyls (PCBs).
High tension power lines do not traverse, nor are adjacent to the property. The closest power
lines are more than one mile to the northwest. It has not been definitively determined if electrical
lines pose a hazard to human health. However, recent evidence presented by the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency suggests the lines are probably not a health risk.
3
Valley Ag Research
e
