Escalon Subdivision
Page 6
►• May 30,2000
VI ASPHALT PAVEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS
L
Recommended pavement sections have been designed using the results of the R-value tests
Land an assumed traffic index. An R-value of 38 was used for design purposes. Based on our
experience with this type of project, traffic indices of 4.0 and 5.5 were used for design. If traffic
indices different from these are required, please contact our office and a suitable recommended
design can be provided. Flexible (asphalt) pavement sections have been design according to the
latest addition of the Cal Trans Highway design manual and using a 20-year pavement life. The
pavement sections are presented next.
L
FLEXIBLE(ASPHALT)PAVEMENT SECTION DESIGN
Subgrade Traffic Traffic PavententSection,inches
R-Vale Index
L Asphalt Aggregate Aggregate
Concrete Base Subbase
L38 4.0 auto 2.0 4.0
38 5.5 auto/truck 3.0 6.0
LThe paving materials must conform to the requirements of the State of California,
Department of Transportation, Standard Specification. Type B asphaltic concrete and class 2
aggregate base should be used.
L
The street subgrade should be stripped of all organic matter, loose soil, etc.,and any required
Lcuts made. A minimum of 6 inches of compacted subgrade should be provided beneath the
pavement sections. The subgrade should be compacted to dry densities in excess of 95 percent of
the maximum dry density obtainable in the ASTM D1557 Compaction Test. The subgrade should
Lhave a minimum R-value of 38.
L VII UTILITY CONSTRUCTION
The soils encountered in the test holes are cohesionless and considered unstable. All trench
L
excavations should be according to Cal OSHA requirements.
Backfill placed in trenches should be placed in approximately 8 inch lifts in uncompacted
thickness. However, thicker lifts may be used, provided the method of compaction is approved by
the soil engineer and the required minimum degree of compaction is achieved. Material should be
L
O
4
1,so`,r
L
