rs evidenced by the attached photographs, the property contains two#bove grounddiesel storage tanks (ASTs) that provides fuel for the Dairy farm g operation.
ng from diesel spillage was observed, as is typical with an agricultural shop operation.
age was driven around since there are growing crops within the interiors, to survey for
evidence of surface and/or subsurface contamination. No unusual containers were observed, nor was
there evidence of solid, or liquid waste disposal. The shop area contains equipment, etc. that is
typically observed at almost any agricultural shop facility in the County. The subject property was
carefully inspected for environmental concerns originating from discolored, disturbed/subsided soils,
stressed vegetation or unusual/noxious odors. None of these environmental indicators were present
in appreciable amounts.
The land surface did not exhibit visual indicators for buried containers such as surfacing of product
residue, soil mounding, or soil depressions. It was obvious that since virtually the entire property is
in agricultural production, the crops would most likely show severe stress if there were shallow
subsurface contamination. It is usually only after a contaminant plume has impacted a domestic well
that buried pesticide containers are discovered. If buried items are discovered during any future
earthwork procedures, etc., the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department must be
contacted immediately.
§3. 3.53.5 It is a possibility minute volumes of agrichemicals sprayed on surrounding properties
May fltift onto the subject property, in addition to the agrichemicals applied to the subject acreage.
The site can be considered in the predominant downgradient windshed to other agricultural
production acreage. In addition, the San Joaquin County Mosquito Abatement District may spray for
mosquitoes on and around the property.
The herbicides Roundup (Glyphosate) and Accent(Nicosulf rron)have been applied to the acreage for
weeds. Round-up Ready alfalfa is grown in which Roundup is applied to the growing alfalfa without
crop injury. Environmental Fate Data for Roundup and Accent are found in Appendix D, and show
that both materials are moderately persistent and have comparatively short half-lives within the soil
environment. Both pose minimal risk of leaching to groundwater. Mixing of these two materials with
water occurs off-site because a custom applicator applies these materials to the farmable acreage.
An important concern associated with the environmental assessment of open properties is the issue of
buried containers or discarded items. It was an occasional practice to dispose of containers or
discarded items by this method many years ago. To detect these types of underground artifacts is
difficult even with the use of ground penetrating radar or other types of non-intrusive, subsurface
analyses.
One electrical transformer was observed on the property. No oil le no since the
transformer appears to be relatively new, as noted in the Photogra6hic Plate J.
jFro itrate Loading and Soil Suitability Studies done south of the property, it is known
there a high co centrations of nitrate in the underlying water table and drinking water aquifers.
This uted to the comparatively shallow groundwater elevation, and the intensely fanned
region. If high nitrate concentrations are detected under the property, it can be attributed to the
application of nitrogen fertilizers in the surrounding agricultural environments. Forage crops require
comparatively high-nitrogen concentrations.
Page-4-
Chesney Consulting
