CC. SEPTIC SYSTEM COMPONENTS
The design of future septic systems for each parcel is based upon the factors of operation,
longevity, and environmental protection. The San Joaquin County Environmental Health
Department will stipulate design requirements for compliance with these factors. Septic system
designs approved by the Health Department have included denitrifying septic tanks, dual septic
tank systems, recirculating sand filters, mound systems, innovative filter beds and shallow
leachfields.
SEPTIC TANKS
Septic tanks affect the sludge, scum and effluent volumes, which in turn affect treatment of
nitrogen within the tanks. Typically, the volumetric capacity of septic tanks serving commercial
facilities should be equal to approximately 5 times the average daily flow(ADF or QAVE). In the
following equations, the numerical value times the QAvE the peaking value (PF) correlate with the
pump-out time interval in yrs. The peaking value is normally taken to be 1.5 for commercial
projects. Since there may be several septic tanks for APN 190-230-07 serving individual
businesses, only APN 190-230-08 will be addressed:
SEPTIC TANK CAPACITY EXAMPLE FOR APN 190-230-08 (1.39 Acres):
Recommended tank capacity for a pump out interval of three yrs: 2.8(QAvE) x Peaking Factor(PF)
=2.8(12 people x 15 gals/day= 504 gals/day) x 1.5 = 756 gal tank capacity required:
Use one - dual compartment 1,600 gallon tank with effluent filter, or two - 1,200 gallon tanks in
series, with effluent filter.
DETENTION TIME EXAMPLE FOR APN 190-230-08:
Detention Time = 1.600 gal tank capacity x 0.70 (30% volume lost to sludge/scum accumulation)
1.5 (Peaking factor) x 180 gals/day
Detention Time=4.0 days. The minimum acceptable detention time is 1.0 day.
LEACHFIELDS/FILTER BEDS
LEACHFIELD/FILTER BED EXAMPLE FOR APN 190-230-08: G
1,600 gallon septic tank. Therefore, the Base Tank Capacity = 1,600 gal:
Base Tank Capacity (BTC)+Average Daily Flow(ADF)x Soil Factor(SF) _
1,600 gal BTC +(12 people x 15 gallons= 180 ADF)= 1,780 x 0.225 SF=400 lineal ft of leachline
FILTER BED = 400 LFLL x 4 = 1,600 sq ft or 40 feet square.
c yaa yt oti/6 AJ F4-
12
Chumy Consulting
