2 weeks for 2-3 months after the rainy season during the first growing season. These
waterings will mimic an extended rainfall pattern typical of a wet water year and enhance
survival.
After the seeded oaks have survived one summer, the weaker seedlings in each
planting collar will be removed, leaving only the most vigorous plant at each planting site.
Monitoring Methodology. Trees will be monitored seasonally for vigor, height, and
canopy diameter and reported on annually over the 5-year monitoring period. Vigor will
be rated excellent, good, fair, poor, or dead, based on a qualitative comparison of leaf
turgor, stem caliber, leaf color, and foliage density in the planted oaks with that of oaks in
nearby native habitats.
Performance Objectives. The minimum acceptable survival rate for the oak plantings
shall be 50% of the original number of acorns planted after 5 years.
Remedial Actions. If the performance objectives are not met, the causes of failure
to meet the performance standards will be determined and the lost plants will be replaced
each year until the objectives are achieved. Monitoring will continue for 5 years after the
last planting necessary to meet the objectives.
Wetlands
Development adjacent to the riparian, freshwater marsh, open water, and vernal pool
habitats could affect dependent wildlife and vegetation by altering runoff, removing
vegetation, or increasing ambient noise and activity levels.
To minimize impacts on wetlands, the project proponent has agreed to incorporate
the following measures into the project plan:
■ Construction will not be permitted in the riparian community or in an adjacent
100-foot buffer at the edge of the riparian canopy. This measure will reduce
potential impacts on riparian vegetation to a less-than-significant level.
■ Freshwater marsh and open water habitats will be protected by establishing a
50-foot-buffer (i.e., development setback) and by continuing maintenance of the
water regime in the three lakes. These measures will avoid any significant
impacts on freshwater marsh and open water habitats.
■ Construction and related activities will not be permitted within the vernal pools
or in a 100-foot buffer distance from the edge of the pools to protect the
individual vernal pools and their watersheds. This measure will prevent
significant impacts on vernal pools.
26
