water standard of 45 mg/L (NO), but the nitrate levels appear to be increasing in two of <br /> the wells as shown in Table 1 . Well T3N R6E 17H3 located approximately 5 miles <br /> upgradient of the property and reported to be 94 feet deep had nitrate levels greater than <br /> in well T2N R6E 7Q1 located approximately 2 miles downgradient of the property and <br /> reported to be 228 feet deep. <br /> 3.4 LAND USE OF SURROUNDING AREA <br /> The area within an approximate 1 mile radius of the property is used predominately <br /> for irrigated agriculture. However, some surrounding property is used for residential and <br /> commercial purposes. A trailer park is located approximately 3/4 mile northeast of the <br /> property, a housing development is located approximately 1 mile southeast, a greenhouse <br /> and nursery is located 100 yards northeast, and commercial facilities are located <br /> approximately 1/2 mile southwest and 1 /2 mile west of the property. Rural residential <br /> property is located along a north-south road approximately 1 /4 mile west of the property <br /> and within 1/4 mile southeast of the property. Bear Creek is located approximately <br /> 1/2 mile south and southeast of the property and serves primarily to carry rainfall runoff <br /> and irrigation drainage water. <br /> Eight Mile Road is located approximately 1 /4 mile south of the property. Property <br /> south of Eight Mile Road sewered, and wastewater is served by the Stockton Sewage <br /> Treatment Plant. Property with habitable buildings north of Eight Mile Road is generally <br /> on septic systems. <br /> The septic tank density within a one-half-mile radius of the property is estimated <br /> at 42 septic systems/square mile. The United States Environmental Protection Agency <br /> (EPA) considers 10 to 40 septic systems/square mile to be an intermediate density usually <br /> not associated with groundwater contamination problems (EPA, 1977). <br /> 4.0 LOCAL SOIL AND GROUNDWATER INFORMATION <br /> This section presents a summary of the soils and groundwater at the property or <br /> within a mile of the property.
