PERCOLATION AND INFILTRATION TEST RESULTS
SSS§ 6.2. To assess the permeability and the infiltration capabilities of the proposed mound system
area, two percolation tests were completed in this area as depicted in the Site Plan. As referenced,
the test depths were 24 and 36 inches below existing grade, giving a comparatively detailed
observation of subsurface permeability at these two strata. Only the 36-inch test depth is recognized
as "official'by EHD. The 24-inch test depth represents infiltration properties of the soil near the
surface._
SSS§ 6.3. On August 8, 2016,the two perc test borings were drilled. The sidewalls of each boring
were scored with a pry-bar to open potentially smeared sidewalls. Two inches of pea gravel was
placed at the bottom and three-inch perforated PVC pipe was inserted in each test boring. Each
boring was then pre-saturated with water at 3x each bore hole volume at 0900 hrs; 24 hrs before the
start of testing. This greatly exceeds EHD pre-saturation standards.
SSS§ 6.4,16.5. On August 9, 2016, percolation testing commenced. No standing water was
observed after the 24-hr soak period in either of the two test borings. Consequently, EHD Perc Test
Procedure#2 was conducted in which testing was done over a four-hour period to induce maximum
soil saturation. The test results indicate comparatively rapid perc rates considering the soil type at
10.0 minutes per inch(min/in) and 17.8 min/in as noted below.
A summary of the perc test results with corresponding application rates in gallons of effluent
accepted per square foot of soil per day are found in Table 2:
TABLE 2
PERCOLATION TEST RESULTS FOR THE DISPOSAL AREA MOUND SYSTEM
WITH CORRESPONDING APPLICATION RATES
IN GALLONS J FTS/DAY
24 INCH DEEP PERC TEST BORING 10.0 min/inch / 0.800 gallons/ft'/day
PERCOLATION RATE/APPLICATION RATE ,
36 INCH DEEP PERC TEST BORING 17.8 min/inch / 0.686 gallons/ft2/day
PERCOLATION RATE/APPLICATION RATE '
Application Rates adapted from Water Quality Control Policy for Siting,Design,Operation, and Maintenance of Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems.
4
Chesney Consulting
