CALCULATED IMPACT FROM NITRATE-NITROGEN LOADING
The calculated or predicted nitrate-nitrogen impact to the soil and ultimately to the groundwater
is difficult to determine due to the number of variables involved. These variables include 1.)
Influence from upgradient nitrate sources, 4.)Variability in wastewater flows, nitrogen
concentrations and dilution effects, 5.) Changes in groundwater directional flow and elevation,
and 6.) Denitrification potential.
From the wastewater characteristics anticipated, the nitrogen emanating from the project may be
at a higher concentration than what would normally be found in a typical domestic or household
system. This can be attributed to the lack of a dilution effect that graywater from showers,
laundry, etc. would contribute. There will be no cooking within a kitchen or office area and
therefore, no need for a garbage disposal. Consequently, there should be no highly concentrated
organic loading. The characteristics of the wastewater flow will be predominately blackwater
from toilets, with a comparatively small volume of graywater from sinks. Other wastewater
constituents may consist of coffee, juices or other similar type liquids to the system.
Various scientific methods exist to estimate nitrate-nitrogen loading. This study uses the
Hantzsche/Finnemore Formula to predict the average resultant concentration of nitrate-nitrogcn in
effluent recharge water. As calculated below, only the area of the packing sheds, docks, trailer
parking area, etc. are used for the areal loading basis, which excludes the walnut orchard. This is
an area of approximately 11 acres from the total acreage of 171 acres. The walnut orchard acreage
will be assessed for nitrogen separately.
7
Va(Zey Ag research
