e
' WASTE DISCHARGE REQURRE ENTS ORDER NO. R5-2002-0034
SUTTER HOME WINERY 4
LODI FACILITY,SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
However, this concentration is dependant upon agronomic application rates, crop uptake, and
attenuation in the soil profile. If groundwater monitoring shows that this discharge results in
increased salinity levels in the groundwater, then the Discharger will be required to modify the
discharge such that there is no impact.
21::Y,Presently, theresisrlittle, solid waste generation at the site, because.grapes are.not crushed at the
facility.
22. The Discharger is required to submit a new Report of Waste Discharge prior to initiating grape
crushing at the site, since grape crushing constitutes a material change in the character of
wastewater discharged.
GROUNDWATER CONDMONS
23. Domestic wastes at the winery are discharged to a septic tank which discharges to a leachfield
constructed in a mound. The system location is presented on Attachment B. Because a tasting
room is not planned for the facility, the system serves mainly the site employees.
24. Three groundwater monitoring wells are located at the mound system. The wells were installed
by requirement of the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department (SJCEHD). The
SJCEHD maintains oversight of the domestic wastewater system. Annual monitoring of the wells
is required by the Monitoring and Reporting Program (MRP) of this Order. Annual monitoring is
required due to the shallow groundwater conditions.
25. The winery is served by a groundwater production well. The well is 225 feet deep and its surface
seal extends to a depth of 100 feet bgs. The location of the well is presented on Attachment B.
The most recent depth to groundwater measurements within this well indicated the depth to
groundwater was 27 feet below ground surface (bgs).
26. Supply water is treated with an ozone injection system and multimedia filtration. Filter backwash
is discharged to the stormwater retention pond. This Order requires the backwash water to be
discharged into the wastewater system as described by Provision G.2.d.
27. The supply well was tested four times. Samples were collected from aquifer zones approximately
100 feet to 225 feet bgs. The groundwater quality is presented in the table below:
Date NO, as N TKN TDS RH
7/10/01 0.2 -- -- $.1
8/9/01 0.9 -- 230 8.1
8/9/01 1.0 -- 230 8.0
11/2/01 0.2 0.1 -- --
NO3 as N denotes Nitrate as Nitrogen,reported in mg/L.
28. As part of the septic tank/mound distribution system installation permitting process, the
Discharger prepared a nitrate loading study. Four shallow groundwater samples were collected
.i
from open boreholes and analyzed for nitrate (as nitrate) concentrations. Analytical results were
