See http://www.energystar.gov/.
o Energy efficient water heaters (such as instantaneous water
heaters/indirect water heaters).
o Energy efficient heating/cooling systems (such as radiant heating system).
o Awnings or other shading mechanism for windows Porch/Patio overhangs.
o Ceiling fans, whole house fans.
o Orient the unit(s) to maximize passive solar cooling and heating when
practicable.
o Utilize passive solar cooling and heating designs.
• Planting of deciduous trees on the south and westerly facing sides of buildings.
• Provide low nitrogen oxide (NOx) emitting and/or high efficiency water heaters.
• If transit service is available to the project site, improvements should be made to
encourage residents to use it. If transit service is not currently available, but is
planned for the future, appropriate easements should be reserved to provide for
future improvements such as bus turnouts, loading areas, and shelters.
• Sidewalks and bikepaths should be installed throughout as much of the project
as possible and should be connected to any nearby open space areas, parks,
schools, commercial areas, etc.
• Natural gas lines and electrical outlets should be installed in patio areas to
encourage the use of gas and/or electric barbecues.
Finally, one of the issues that will arise in conjunction with any proposed demolition is
compliance with the National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants
(NESHAPS). Specifically, the primary air pollutant of concern is asbestos. To ascertain
whether this project is subject to NESHAPS, the project applicant is advised to review
the enclosed Asbestos - Compliance Assistance Bulletin, dated December 1994. Brian
Dodds is the Northern Region's District contact for the program and is available should
you need further assistance.
