X 454 kg= 1,393,780 kg live wt.
184 kg N produced per year per 1000 kg live wt.
184 kg N X 1394=256,496 total kg N produced per year.
As referenced, it is difficult to quantify the extent of N losses, however, the scientific literature
ranges from 40% to 801/o N loss. For this study, 50% loss will be used. Therefore, total N
production at the subject facility is estimated at 128,227 kg or 282,101 lbs per year. Another
35% reduction in N can be factored in for dry waste exported, for a total nitrogen produced on-
site of 181,366 lbs. per year.
6.) The procedures for determining crop nutrient needs, particularly nitrogen, coupled with the
factors in assessing the proper nutritional amounts without overloading the cropland is a highly
complex process. In an effort to simplify the information required to make best management
decisions for optimum crop growth and nutrient utilization, we have provided a Manure Analysis
Reference Guide attached with this report. This Guide is published by A& L Agricultural
Laboratories and provides one of the best sources of information to determine crop nutrient
utilization from manure. The suitable rate of manure application is determined by the ability of
the soil and crop combination to immobilize and utilize the nutrients in the applied manure, which
is detailed on the Worksheet found in the Guide.
The existing cropland which is a part of the dairy facility totals 442 acres. It is our understanding
that 200 acres will be planted in alfalfa and 242 acres will be a doubled crop of corn and oats.
According to published scientific sources, alfalfa will use 480 lbs. of nitrogen per acre, corn will
use 250 lbs. and oats will use 115 lbs. per acre. Total N use=
200 Ac alfalfa X 480 lbs. N/Ac= 96,000 lbs. of N needed.
242 Ac corn and oats X 365 lbs. N/Ac= 88,330 lbs. of needed.
TOTAL N needed= 184,330 lbs. of N.
8
