METHODS AND RESULTS
` Prefield Research
` Jones & Stokes' efforts to identify cultural resources within the project area consisted of
a literature review and records search, historic map research, consultation with Native
Americans, and an intensive pedestrian survey of the project area.
On May 10, 2005, a records search was conducted at the Central California Information
Center of the California Historical Resources Information System at California State University,
Stanislaus. The records search covered the project area and a 0.5-mile radius around the project
area. The records search consulted the state's database of previous cultural resources studies and
recorded cultural resources sites, as well as pertinent historical inventories and registers and
historic maps. The records search indicates that four studies have been conducted within or
immediately adjacent to the project area within the last 10 years (Macdougall 1994; Leach-Palm
2004a, 2004b; Rosenthal and Meyer 2004). None of the studies conducted in the last 10 years
have been located within the project area.
No known cultural resources are located within the project area. No recorded sites or
isolated finds have been discovered within a 0.5-mile radius of the project area. No properties
listed on the CRHR are located within the vicinity of the project area. General Land Office
(GLO)Plat (1855-1859) indicated the presence of a"road" in the project area that was not
located during the archaeological survey. An unrecorded segment of the historic Delta Mendota
Canal defines the southwest project area footprint but is not within the project area.
Native American Consultation
r
On June 3,2005, Jones & Stokes cultural resources staff contacted the NAHC and
requested that they consult their sacred lands database and provide a list of potentially interested
Native American representatives for the project area. On June 15, 2005, the NAHC responded,
stating that the search of their sacred lands file failed to indicate the presence of Native American
cultural resources within the project area; they also provided a list of interested Native American
representatives. Jones & Stokes sent contact letters describing the project with attached maps of
the project area to all representatives or agencies on June 24, 2005 (Appendix B). Follow-up
telephone calls were made in August 2005. As of November 2005, no replies to follow-up
telephone calls and messages have been received.
DeSilva Gates Quarry Project.San Joaquin County Cultural Resources Inventory Report
` Community Development Department 6 November 1005
AS 06105
