4 Results
Annual Grassland —
Annual grassland occurs in narrow strips adjacent to crops, including the spaces between orchard
rows. Commonly found constituents of this habitat type within the study area are barnyard grass _
(Echinochloa crus-galli), feather fingergrass (Chlorin virgata), tumbleweed(Salsola tragus),
yellow star-thistle(Centaurea solstitialis), Bermuda grass(Cynodon dactylon),cheeseweed
(Malva parvii lora),common purslane(Portulaca oleracea), ripgut brome (Bromus diandrus), —
and spotted spurge(Chamaesyce maculata).
Riparian Scrub
Hospital Creek is ephemeral and channelized and flows east through the study area. The channel
is lined with riprap and gravel downstream of the box culvert crossing of the Delta-Mendota —
Canal, and transitions to a mostly unlined channel along the study area's southern boundary.
Riparian habitat is limited to Hospital Creek and is composed of mulefat scrub and scalebroom
scrub. Mulefat scrub is characterized by mulefat(Baccharis salicifolia),narrowleaf willow(Salix —
exigua), and arroyo willow(S. lasiolepis). Associated species in this habitat include mustard
(Brassica sp.), heliotrope(Heliotropium curassavicum), and curly dock(Rumex crispus). Mulefat
scrub is limited to the bottoms of irrigation ditches and Hospital Creek or other areas where water
may collect. Scalebroom scrub is characterized by Scalebroom(Lepidospartum squamatum),
California sage(Artemisia californica),mugwort(A. douglasiana),tree tobacco(Nicotiana
glauca), gumplant(Grindelia camporum), pigweed(Chenopodium album),and Mexican tea —
(C. ambrosioides). Scalebroom scrub is not typically classified as a riparian community;
however, in the study area, elements of this community can be found growing along the steep, _
well-drained banks of irrigation ditches and Hospital Creek.
4.2.3 Site Hydrology Overview
The study area sits on nearly level to very gently sloping alluvial fans that historically drained to
the northeast. Most of the natural hydrology of the site is interrupted by roadways, drainage
canals, and agricultural ditches or has been altered through grading for agricultural purposes.
Although the study area previously drained overland toward the San Joaquin River, most of the
site now drains to Hospital Creek, overflow irrigation basins, or various non jurisdictional
roadside ditches and agricultural ditches and is drained by surface percolation, overland sheet
flow, small rills, or roadside and agricultural ditches. _
4.2.4 Jurisdictional Waters of the United States
An overview of jurisdictional features(waters of the United States) is shown on Figure 3.
Wetland determination data point sheets are provided in Appendix A. Table 1 provides a
summary of jurisdictional features including average width, linear feet, and acreage for all
features within the study area.
VemaGs Qua"Mining and Re amation Project 4-6 ESA 1203015
Wetland Delineation Report February 2006
